Bigfoot: Ape, Ghost or Alien

From an article published over sixty years ago in the Hunboldt Times announcing the discovery of giant footprints; to the abundance of ‘Bigfoot’ articles, books and documentaries out there; Bigfoot is without doubt a household name known throughout the world.

It was that small Northern Californian newspaper that described the discovery of 16 inch long humanlike footprints by a road construction team. And that same newspaper gave the name ‘Bigfoot’ to the odd creature that created the massive footprints.

Now it turns out that those footprints that were discovered in Northern California were actually a prank by Ray Wallace. However, it wasn’t until 2002, when Wallace’s children revealed his joke. Still, by that point ‘Bigfoot’ interest was already very much on the increase.

And it is with this realisation of Wallace’s prank that I present an interesting similarity to a case I have previously discussed; the Philip Experiment. Is it possible that with Wallace’s prank, the Bigfoot story gained enough belief to make the entity real for want of a better term. So, this thought pattern would suggest that Bigfoot could possibly be a Tulpa. A Tulpa being an entity created by the mind, but acting independently of it. I am not saying that I believe that Bigfoot is a Tulpa, but merely suggesting it as one possibility.

However, think about it for a second. If Bigfoot was a Tulpa, then over the years as this thought form gained increased focus from a greater number of people, then this entity could possibly grow stronger. As it is supposed to be an ape-like animal hiding deep in the forest then that is likely to be how we would see it.

What is particularly interesting about Bigfoot is that the reports are actually older than sixty odd years. The American Indian tribes of the Pacific Northwest held in their own myths a creature known as the Sasquatch. These tribal stories extend the presence of our Bigfoot friend much further back in time. However, these stories could still support the Tulpa theory, meaning that Bigfoot would still remain a spirit or ghost, which is only seen in glimpses at the right moment.

Like many areas of the paranormal field, this crypto hominids story is littered with instances of fraud, which often make determining the truth very difficult. That said perhaps that very same fraud helps keep interest and belief that maintains our probable thought form cryptid.

Of course we cannot discuss Bigfoot without talking about the distinct possibility that this crypto hominid actually does physically exist. Other than the discovery of many large footprints, similar to Wallace’s fake, evidence to show the existence of Bigfoot has been somewhat subjective.

There has been many snippets of video footage, capturing Bigfoot in his natural habitat over the years. Granted many such videos have been said to be fake or are just plain questionable. To be fair video footage often raises debate within the paranormal field. Especially these days when it can be simply edited using an app on your phone. Plus as we all know from watching movies and their special effects, we only have the word of the person who filmed the clip, regarding its authenticity. So, as compelling as the many video clips are out there showing Bigfoot, in my opinion they are not quite enough.

However, witness testimony and legitimate field study of Bigfoot is certainly good supporting evidence. Whilst many scientist deny Bigfoot’s existence, stating that it cannot be zoological reality. Equally, it is claimed that there is a distinct lack of evidence to support Bigfoot’s existence.

In this paranormal field where taboo subjects are plentiful there are a few rogue scientists willing to look into the possibility of this crypto hominid existing in parts of the Americas where there are few humans to disturb it. The Bigfoot Field Research Organisation (BFRO) has quite a few hypotheses and research projects; with some by Doctors. This showing that serious research is being conducted and papers written on this very subject.

The documentary I recently watched on Bigfoot followed Todd Standing as he spent considerable time in the wilderness, whilst he searched for a Sasquatch. I liked that Standing took time to spend time alone deep in the wilderness, interacting with Bigfoot groups. At least that is what the documentary showed the audience and on this occasion I don’t have additional information to question it. Feel free to comment if you have seen this documentary on Netflix, and have an opinion on Standing’s work.

Standing also took Dr Jeff Meldrum into the wilderness to help with the research and gain his opinion. Although the pair didn’t show any significant evidence, but what they did provide was interesting to be fair. In fact I do have to admit I was left with a feeling that I too wanted to head out into the US wilderness in search of Bigfoot, or ‘Squatching’ as its also known. So, if any of my US readers have an interest in Bigfoot and fancy putting me up then give me a shout; I will pop over the pond and we can go squatching.

There is one last part to this post on Bigfoot that I want to cover – Bigfoot as an alien. Let me be clear here though, when I say alien in this case I don’t mean that a bunch of Sasquatches landed on Earth hundreds of years ago in a flying saucer. I am equally not stating that Bigfoot jumped the boarder and is laying low deep in the forests of the Americas.

Perhaps Bigfoot could be some kind of dimensional being, which depending on the circumstances become visible to us at times. This particular Bigfoot theory could be described as being ‘a little out there,’ but personally I don’t think it is any less viable than the Tulpa one from earlier.

We understand so little about our universe currently, that we must remain open minded about all probable possibilities. Could it be that Bigfoot represents an entity capable of slipping between dimensions, perhaps even time, which makes the creature ever more elusive to us. Are we searching for a physical animal or something more?

Regardless of whether Bigfoot is an ape, a ghost or an alien; the mystery certainly sparks the imagination of many the world over. The hunt for Bigfoot is certainly a romantic link back to those days of the great explorers. Searching the rough wilderness for a mysterious beast if you will, is probably seen by many as one of the last great expeditions of discovery. Something that I found appealing when I started researching the paranormal – it is like exploring the unknown on a regular basis. Steering into the great unknown, following our adventurous hearts to discovery is what makes us human. Perhaps something similar helps Bigfoot remain hidden from us. Either way the literature tells us that we are likely to be pretty similar to the elusive Sasquatch.

  1. If there is any truth to these events, then it is surely the ‘Tulpa’ theory. This falls into the “does life imitate art, or does art imitate life.” Personally, I believe that both scenarios are true. My own thinking regarding the Himalayan Yeti, is that it is a sin eater, which travels the earth as a human, and which then returns to the wilderness where it discards its clothing, gains bulk, and grows long hair to protect it from the icy conditions. It rids itself of all the sins it has collected, by letting out of terrible screams into the vastness of the mountain ranges. Then, the cycle repeats. Maybe this is another instance of that? Makes sense, if one takes into account the growing population and increased likelihood of sin.
